Summer Camp Coordinator
The Summer Camp Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, operation and support of programs ensuring their effective and cohesive operation on a day-to-day basis; the training, support and supervision of camp mentors; and assurance of camper well-being.
Duties/Responsibilities may include the following:
- Participate in interview process for the hiring of camp mentors
- Actively participate in planning and delivering required mentor training components
- Assist the I-STEM Director and school administrators in creating a schedule of enriching and fun STEM-related camp activities to engage the student campers
- Assist the Director and campus partners with planning camp schedules and logistics
- Attend and contribute to camp planning meetings
- Work in tandem with school administrators to communicate with families, parents, and guardians to promote the program as well as address any special needs or concerns.
- Supervise the camp mentor staff
- Greet and welcome all campers, staff, and partners each day
- Provide orientation to all campers on the first day of camp
- Remain visible and accessible to staff and campers throughout the camp session
- Adhere to and support all camp policies and procedures
- Proactively identify and solve logistical and administrative issues and areas of concern for school administrators and staff, campus partners, I-STEM staff, and student campers
- Maintain high levels of morale and conduct by providing support to mentors, staff, and students
- Submit a final report detailing the program’s success, making any recommendations for next year and any other constructive comments
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree and knowledge of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s environment, academic programs, polices, and procedures is required.
- A Master’s Degree in Education, Social Sciences, Administration, or similar is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, computer, and organizational skills are required.
- Supervisory and management skills and experience are required.
- The ability to take charge and motivate others is required—as is enthusiasm for the program.
- Knowledge of STEM fields is required—experience in STEM fields is preferred.
- Experience working with youth and school communities is required.
- Experience working with diverse populations (ages and demographic groups) is required.
- An understanding of the psychology of youth and adolescent development; and of the development of parental involvement is required.
- Prior experience with Summer Camps is a plus; but not required.
Description of Work Environment:
The work leading up to (and post camp) will typically be conducted at the I-STEM Education Initiative. An office (or work area) and computer will be provided. Some work will be required at other locations such as a local high school. Camp will be held at various buildings/laboratories on the University of Illinois campus—and may include outdoor activities.
